In 2001, a service was born in Japan. In an era before blogs or social media existed, Kanshinkukan implemented the idea of "connecting through interests." It won the Good Design Award and gathered around 60,000 users. But in 2016, it closed with the words "its role as a place where information connects with information has ended."
Since then, social media has exploded. But Facebook became a machine for maintaining human relationships, X became a place of speed and outrage, and Instagram became a visual competition. All of them share the structure of "people first, interests second."
The question Kanshinkukan was asking has never been fully answered. Hoheto is the modern answer to that question.
"I was writing for myself,
and someone was standing in the same place."
First inevitability — continuation of Iroha."Iroha ni hoheto" is a poem from the Heian period that encompasses all Japanese syllables. If "iroha" is the beginning, "hoheto" is the word that moves toward what comes next — perfectly aligned with the concept of inheriting the spirit of Kanshinkukan and moving beyond it.
Second inevitability — the founder's name. The opening sounds of Horie Hayato — Ho, H, o — overlap with the three sounds of "hoheto." A brand story was born in which the founder's name lives within the service name.
Third inevitability — the blank of meaning."Hoheto" is a sequence of sounds with no inherent meaning. That is precisely why the Hoheto service can breathe new meaning into it. The name being a blank slate becomes its greatest strength.
Hoheto places "writing" at its center. Not posting, but nurturing. Not writing to show someone, but writing deeply for yourself — and then, quietly, someone with the same interest appears. That is what this place is.

The internet was once full of unexpected discoveries. We encountered things we hadn't searched for, and were moved by the words of people we didn't know. Algorithms have turned that serendipity into predictable pleasure.
Hoheto is an attempt to return that serendipity to human hands. Carefully put your interests into words, and quietly place them in the world. One day, someone standing in the same place will quietly appear.
Like the moment in an old bookshop when a stranger reaches for the same book. That is the experience Hoheto aims for.
Iroha ni hoheto, chirinuru wo—
Even scattered, we gather again.
All interests lead here.
